Brief Psychosocial Intervention for Adolescents: Keep it Simple; Do it Well
By Ian Goodyer, Raphael Kelvin
The highest incidence for clinical depressions is during adolescence. Furthermore, mental health illnesses that recur over the life-course begin in young people. 70% of all mental health emerge before thirty years of age. Almost all interventions for young people have been first developed for and targeted at adults. Here for the first time is a talking therapy (BPI), that has been developed for, and with, adolescents. After thirty years of clinical experience with mentally ill adolescents and two major randomised controlled trials of treatment, the authors reveal a brief psychosocial intervention that is as effective as CBT for adolescents with depression with and without comorbid anxiety and conduct disorder. BPI can be taught to mental health practitioners in sixteen hours and they can immediately start delivery of care. After a six-month supervision, new BPI practitioners offer an evidence based and NICE approved treatment in their usual clinical practice.

Depression and other mental health illnesses have become increasingly prevalent in young people, particularly during adolescence. In fact, research has shown that 70% of all mental health issues emerge before the age of thirty. Despite this alarming statistic, most interventions and therapies have been developed for and targeted at adults, leaving a significant gap in effective treatments for young people. However, a breakthrough has been made with the development of a talking therapy called BPI (Brief Psychosocial Intervention), specifically designed for and with adolescents.
After three decades of clinical experience with mentally ill adolescents and two major randomized controlled trials, the authors of this book, Ian Goodyer and Raphael Kelvin, present this revolutionary therapy that has proven to be as effective as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for adolescents with depression, both with and without comorbid anxiety and conduct disorder. BPI can be easily taught to mental health practitioners in just sixteen hours, allowing them to immediately start delivering care to young people in need.
One of the key advantages of BPI is its brevity and simplicity, making it accessible for busy professionals. The therapy consists of evidence-based techniques and approaches that are easy to understand and implement. With just six months of supervision, new BPI practitioners can offer an approved treatment in their usual clinical practice, providing effective assistance to young individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Now available in a new edition, this book by Ian Goodyer and Raphael Kelvin offers a comprehensive guide to understanding and implementing BPI. The authors draw on their extensive clinical experience and research to provide a clear and concise explanation of the therapy, its benefits, and its application in a clinical setting.

Book Review: A Breakthrough in Adolescent Mental Health Treatment
This groundbreaking book by Ian Goodyer and Raphael Kelvin offers a new solution to an urgent problem – the lack of effective mental health interventions for young people. Unlike traditional therapies that have been primarily developed for adults, BPI (Brief Psychosocial Intervention) is specifically designed for adolescents struggling with depression and related disorders.
What sets BPI apart is its brevity and simplicity. The therapy consists of evidence-based techniques and approaches that can be easily understood and implemented by mental health practitioners. Goodyer and Kelvin have successfully translated their decades of clinical experience into a concise and practical guide for delivering this revolutionary treatment.
Through two major randomized controlled trials, the authors have demonstrated that BPI is just as effective as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in treating depression in adolescents. Furthermore, it has shown promising results for those with comorbid anxiety and conduct disorder. This evidence provides hope for young individuals who previously had limited treatment options.
One of the key advantages of BPI is its accessibility. Mental health practitioners can learn the therapy in just sixteen hours, allowing them to immediately start delivering care to young people in need. After a six-month supervision period, they can confidently provide an evidence-based treatment that is approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).
The impact of BPI on the lives of young people cannot be overstated. It offers a glimmer of hope and a pathway to recovery for those who may have felt lost and misunderstood. By addressing the unique challenges and needs of adolescents, Goodyer and Kelvin have filled a critical gap in mental health treatment.
