Documentation and Coding for Physiatric Ultrasound Lecture (0.75 CME credits)

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Perform a SPORTS US examination of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle-foot as recommended by the AIUM Practice Guidelines for the Performance of the MSK US Examination
  • Perform and appropriately document (eg, capture, label, save, and transfer images; generate a report) shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle-foot procedures
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of needle tracking using an in-plane versus out-of-plane approach, and provide clinical examples of when each approach may be beneficial
  • Use ultrasound guidance for muscle and nerve chemodenervation preocdedures such as botulinum toxin injections and peripheral nerve blocks
  • Employ techniques for muscle and nerve identification using ultrasound
  • Review the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes most frequently used in physiatric ultrasound (US)
  • Be familiar with the procedural and corresponding documentation requirements for using these codes
  • Understand how to properly code for off-label and unlisted procedures
